Brigadeiro is the most famous and popular sweet in Brazilian birthday parties. Made with curso de brigadeiro gourmet milk, butter and chocolate, the sweet has gained some very interesting versions, such as combined with pistachios, wine and even pepper!
The origin of the sweet, and its name, is quite interesting. The word Brigadeiro (translation of Brigadier General) is used to designate certain ranks in the military forces. Back in the 40’s, Brazilian Aeronautics Brigadier Eduardo Gomes was a candidate for the presidency and a group of women who supported him, decided to create and sell small chocolate sweets to raise money for his campaign . These sweets were named after Gomes’ patent: Brigadeiro. He lost the election, but the Brigadeiro has become one of the most representative Brazilian pastry items!
400g of sweetened condensed milk
70g powdered chocolate (at least 50% cocoa)
30g of butter
To finalize 150g of chocolate sprinkles (any sprinkles will do)
Place all ingredients into a saucepan and cook stirring constantly until the mixture no longer sticks to the bottom of the pan or until it reaches 221°F.
Once this point is reached, remove from heat and let cool in a dish.
When completely cooled, preferably cold, roll into balls of around 20g each and then roll in the sprinkles.
